Ephemeral Interlude

Ravenous and weary, I walked over the bridge, stepping on one smooth cobblestone after another. The moon danced off the somber river’s banks. I paused. A puff of breath emanated from between my lips and hovered for a moment before disappearing into the night. Buildings were illuminated by the street lamps’ amber radiance. The screech of breaking rounded the corner before the streetcar did. Sparks crackled above it as it switched tracks and veered away. My shoulders hunched to my neck to keep warm and, in doing so, gave me a hulking figure. I had the unshaven appearance of a street thug, which was to my liking at this ungodly hour. A taxi rolled up next to me and then hastened away, consumed by the night. I walked onward.
